Ironman 70.3 Augusta will offer athletes the unique opportunity to race in two states, as the cycling portion of this event will take athletes into the great state of South Carolina.
Prior to the bike portion, athletes will swim a 1.2 mile point-to-point course in the Savannah River exiting at the Augusta Rowing Club Complex and the Augusta public boat launch.
Athletes will then cycle a single-loop 56 mile bike course through the beautiful countryside of South Carolina before returning to the Georgia side of the Savannah River and the city of Augusta, Ga.
Finally, athletes will run a two-loop course consisting of 13.1 miles, through the downtown community of Augusta finishing near the Augusta Marriott Hotel and Conference Center.
Athletes will be vying for 50 age group slots to the Foster Grant Ironman World Championship 70.3 being held in Clearwater, Florida and a $25,000.00 professional prize purse.

According to the official website for the event http://www.ironmanaugusta.com/ the start time is 7:30. The suggestion that kayakers need to be there 2.5 hours before the start seems to be an overabundance of caution. I plan to launch at 7 AM.

I agree-7 a.m. is a more reasonable time. We were just passing on information from the group in charge of water safety. This is a Sunday morning-there will be no TRAFFIC downtown that early...

The kayak put-in is also the main transition area. I'm not sure about being there at 5am, but with 3,177 athletes dropping off bikes and all wanting to park close to the race HQ, I think it's a safe call to anticipate some traffic...

I think the best option would be to launch on the Carolina side of the river.
1) Get access permission from a waterfront property owner on the S. Carolina side of the river in the vicinity of the swim course.
2) Lacking that I am thinking that I will launch opposite River Walk near where the Greeneway bike trail ends.
3) A less attractive option would be any power boat to tow or carry kayaks between the N. Augusta boat ramp and the River Walk Marina. Does anyone know the owner of a suitable boat ?

P.S. There is a concrete boat launch ramp almost directly across the Savannah River from the end of the swim course. A sign there says it is restricted to residents of River North but I am going to check into permission for safety kayakers to use it or a vacant lot a little farther up stream. Actually the vacant lot, which has a dock, is the better choice. Someone who knows a River North resident would probably have a better chance of success than I will. Anyone want to step up ?

The check in time for kayakers is 6:30 AM on race day. Parking for volunteers is available at the boathouse. I haven't gotten an answer to how we get from our vehicles to the start area. It will be very crowded with 3000 participants. The swim portion should be over by 10:30. Check out the web site for more details http://www.ironmanaugusta.com/

I expect that one or more of the volunteer water scooter or other power boats operators will be happy to tow kayaks upstream as needed.

Volunteers working the upper (start) portion of the course can put in at the 5th street Marina. There is a large parking area and vacant lot off off 6th street. After the race, you can float down to the finish and take out at the Boathouse and catch a shuttle back to the start area or you can paddle back up stream and get out at the Marina. Do I have you on the list as a volunteer yet? Organizers want volunteers to check in by 6:30am on raceday at the Boathouse. There will be a hospitality tent.

The following is an excerpt from an email sent by Eric Gray of River Runners:
"There will be a meeting for kayakers, lifeguards and personal water craft personnel on Saturday, September 26 at 10am by The Boathouse on Riverfront Dr. The meeting will cover check-in times, parking, and job duties. Everyone working the event will need to sign a volunteer waiver.
Getting to The Boathouse: 101 Riverfront Dr. From North Augusta (13th St. Bridge): turn left on Reynolds St. When Reynolds St. crosses 5th St. the road will curve left (becomes Bay St). At the stop sign, turn left on Reynolds St. When the road curves hard right (at the fire station) turn left and go through the levee. We will meet under the covered picnic area on the left after passing through the levee. "

The CKCA had a good turn-out. I had one mature lady in the last group hang on my boat to rest. I know several of our members helped other swimmers. We were in the water at 6:30 a.m. and out by 10 a.m. The traffic was crazy but it was fun. They are doing this event next year. Cool.
